The young and talented R&B singer, Kehlani, surprised her fans and social media by sharing her new single “24/7” online.
The 21 year old artist recently performed the deeply personal song, for the first time, since she tried to harm herself.
The single was written to inspire, and according to fans, it’s working.
Kehlani’s music speaks about accepting your feelings, and the fact that it’s okay to not always be strong.
Her ability to continue making music, in spite of personal challenges, is an inspiration to listeners. Her message: keep looking to live in a positive light, even after a difficult situation.
Kehlani released her single “24/7” last month. In it, she opens up in a way she hasn’t before, giving us insight into her pain.
Earlier this year, in March, Kehlani was hospitalized after her suicide attempt which entertainment reports claimed was caused by boy drama. Fans of Kehlani on twitter were able to see it play out on social media.
The first line of “24/7” says “ it’s okay to not be okay.” As the song continues, she encourages listeners to embrace their feelings and be honest with themselves.
She goes on to say those feelings don’t make someone wrong, it makes them human.
Kehlani determined to spread positivity through her music, but she didn’t stop there. She
decided to come back stronger than ever and continue her tour with a small set of shows.
During one of her shows, the singer announced she wants to help others through difficult times, and that she will be working closely with the Suicide Prevention Hotline.
In that emotional first performance, she told the audience, “If you have a friend, and they’re scaring you a little, just love them,” she said. “Hug them and love them up and tell
them that it’s good. And from me to you, you are worth it. You are perfect. You need to be here
every single day, that you are meant to be here. Get up every day and remind yourself.
Once Kehlani posted on social media that she was in the hospital along with a paragraph addressing the rumors that were attacking her character, she ended the Instagram post by saying, “ God saved me for a reason, and for that...I must be grateful.Cuz I’m not in heaven right now for a reason.”
Kehlani is shedding light on an issue that doesn’t just affect celebrities, depression and the desire to self harm can affect anyone.
The National Institute of Mental Health(NIMH) reports that women are more likely than men to attempt suicide, and that the population that is the second most likely to die due to suicide is those ages 15 - 34.
The Center for Disease Control also reports that females are twice as likely to experience depression as men.
The National Suicide Prevention Hotline has listed the top 5 signs that someone is depressed or is thinking about suicide.
